DAMILOLA: THE BOY NEXT DOOR

The lonely death of ten-year-old Damilola Taylor in the stairwell of an estate in Peckham in November 2000 seemed to encapsulate a nation mired in violent crime and a society that was fundamentally broken. But Yinka Bokinni remembers a very different side to her own childhood on the North Peckham Estate. For her it was a warm, loving and happy community and Damilola was the naughty, cheeky, lively boy she played with almost every day. Now, twenty years on, Yinka explores the devastating impact her friend’s death had on her community, her area, and the lives of almost everyone she knew as she confronts for the first time, the trauma which the children from the area have lived with ever since.
